MAIHAUGEN - open air museum

Maihaugen is a cultural history museum beautifully located in Lillehammer, featuring several hundred historic buildings. Here, you can explore past environments and ways of life from different periods of Norwegian history.

Maihaugen is also a wonderful area for a walk, even when the museum itself is closed—no matter the season. Whether you visit in summer, autumn, winter, or spring, the surroundings offer a peaceful and scenic experience.

You can find the official opening hours here

If you simply want to go for a walk, the outdoor museum gates are open before and after the museum's opening hours, as well as on days when the museum is closed.

  • During museum opening hours, access is through the main entrance.

  • The gates are open:
    • June 1 – August 31: 07:00–09:00 and 17:00–22:00
    • September 1 – May 31: From 07:00 until 30 minutes before the museum opens, and from closing time until 22:00 (see official opening hours above)
